Avocado Oil Benefits: Plant-Based Omegas

For decades, fats have been thought to contribute to poor heart health and obesity. In more recent years, however, there’s been a considerable push to incorporate more healthy fats into our diets as consumers begin to recognize the health benefits of these fats. With health and sustainability coming to the forefront of consumer food trends, plant-based fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are on the rise to stardom. Omega 3

Polyunsaturated omega 3s, commonly associated with fish and fish oils, are also key players in plant-based fats. Unlike the well-known omega 3s that are found in fish (DHA and EPA), plant-based omega 3s include Alpha-Linolenic Acids (ALAs) which are equally and uniquely powerful.

Omega 6

Omega-6 is another powerful polyunsaturated fatty acid when consumed in proper quantities. Generally speaking, omega 6s and 3s should be consumed at a ratio of 4:1. When properly consumed, omega-6s have been known to treat rheumatoid arthritis, treat breast cancer, and reduce body fat.

Omega 9

Unlike omega-3s and 6s, omega-9 is a monounsaturated fatty acid and is particularly prevalent in extra virgin avocado oil and refined avocado oil. Oleic acid is the most common omega-9 fatty acid and is praised for its health contributions in diets such as the Mediterranean diet, the Paleo diet, and the Ketogenic diet. Oleic acid is a super-fat indeed with health benefits including: reducing “bad” ldl cholesterol in diabetes patients, improving insulin sensitivity, and reducing inflammation. Replacing saturated and trans fats with monounsaturated fats is also believed to improve metabolic health.
