The Superpowers of Our

Favorite Superfood: Avocado Oil

It’s no secret that avocados are the superfood of the century. All superfoods are packed with their own unique nutritional benefits, but avocados can make just about anything taste delicious. Our favorite lesser known superfood is avocado’s greatest gift: its oil! Packed with healthy fats and antioxidants such as Vitamin E and Carotenoids, incorporating a tablespoon or two of extra virgin or refined avocado oil into your daily routine can do wonders for your body.

Healthy Fats

Avocado oil contains plenty of “good fats” such as monounsaturated (omega 9) and polyunsaturated fats (omegas 3 and 6). Both of these fats play a major role in cell development, nutrient absorption, preventing inflammation, and assisting in muscle movement. These fats are most lauded for their ability to prevent heart disease by lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol. Evidence of this is seen in diets such as the Mediterranean diet, which has shown that those who consume more of these good fats experience significantly fewer instances of heart disease and live longer than those who primarily consume trans and saturated fats.

Antioxidants

Carotenoids are pigments that are produced by plants and act as antioxidants. Avocado oil contains two types of carotenoids called Lutein and Beta Carotene, both of which provide their own respective benefits. Lutein prevents inflammation all throughout the body, but the eyes are its specialty! In fact, Lutein is commonly referred to as the eye vitamin because of its power in preventing eye disease, vision loss, and cataracts in older adults. Beta-carotene (also known as Vitamin E), like other antioxidants, protects against free radicals that can damage your cells and cause chronic illness in your body such as lung cancer and heart disease. Studies have also shown beta-carotene to have a significant impact on preventing cognitive decline, particularly in relation to those at risk for Alzheimer’s Disease. The high fat content of avocado oil provides optimal absorption for these antioxidants to take action and keep us healthy!
